This painted portrait of King Charles 111 has been likened to a bowl of pasta by one critic! At the risk of being controversial I’m going to put my hand up and say I like it for its fresh approach and the likeness. So many high level portraits are overly worked and lacking this sort of freshness in mark making which give movement and an attractive dynamic to the painting. I’ve included a post by the BBC as further info if you’d like some might but interesting reading on the background of the commissioner work .
Let me know if you like it or not below!
Not sure about the butterfly but I like the idea of the symbolic connection to King Charles environmental work.

I loved it from the minute l saw it. The artist Jonathan Yeo is brilliant. It’s a dynamic portrait and has subtle symbolism. Fresh and interesting. I think the Queen would have been impressed💐
I like it also.....it's a breakaway from traditional portraits. I would love to know what Charles thinks of it.
It's hard on the eyes and doesn't work. If they had stuck to developing the silhouette it could have been extraordinary as the facial depiction is excellent as is the countenance of the king.
I am not a fan of King Charles but I actually love the portrait. I love the use of the red hue and brings a modern vision of Charles to even allow it to been seen by the public. The butterfly I assume represents his life long love of nature and the environment. It is so different from the stiff unreal portraits of the royals before him.
I don’t like it and I’m sure his mother would turn in her grave if she saw it. It looks like the artist tried to cover up his work underneath with the red, not befitting for a royal portrait in my opinion!
The monarch butterfly - MK ultra. Mirror the images and you can see baphomet. It’s satanic
Mirror it and put it side by side upside down and in the middle it’s demonic.
The only redeeming quality I see in this that the face matches his.. I found/find all that red startling and hideous. I've looked at more than once and each time my reaction is more negative. Get rid of that red bohemoth pizza (that was pretty close to whomever said that in prior comments) Then get yourself and your country a proper portrait of its king.
I also like this...it shows him as a very human figure, beautiful emphasis on his face.
I love it. The work on the hands is extraordinary (they read as underwater to me). Add in the whole layered symbolism and the utter lack of bowing to convention. I think this is one of the ones that in 300 years people are going to still be talking about, unlike a lot of 20th century modernist stuff that tried to be shocking or the technically excellent but yawningly conventional stuff the Crown has been so known for commissioning. I will also say I like the Tatler cover of Kate but it obviously is technically and stylistically so different than this that they aren't remotely the same thing.
I think it’s amazing, so different from the norm! Love the red hues!
I wasn’t a fan at first, but after seeing Princess Kate and Gina Rinehart’s portrait, suddenly Charles’ portrait looks pretty bloody good!
Absolutely LOVE it. The red is symbolic of the Welsh guards and the butterfly symbolic of his transformation from Prince to monarch. It's an extraordinarily dynamic portrait. Jonathan Yeo is so talented. Brilliant work. 👏
I love it! I think in real life you would see more detail and the symbolism better. ‘A King emerging’.
Didn’t care for it at first but it has grown on me. His face and hands are exceptionally well done. I like it.
I love it it is extraordinary and has really captured his kindness and love.
Makes me think its a Christian painting - covered in the blood of Jesus - although apparently its suppose to be the welsh guards - could be the blood of anyone though
It makes King Charles features look softer, more modest and empathetic which is not a look I personally associate with him. I think that it's possible the artist views him differently to me though. The other possibility is that he looks different away from the media and I like the idea that he may have caught a side that we don't always see.
I think I like it lol but personally I think the head and hands look like they’ve sort of been plonked on, too separate if you know what I mean
Not impressed. The Red to me is very distracting to whom the portrait is protraying. To me it would work better if he was a matador
In the future they will think he was a vampire
I think the portrait is great , it’s representing humanity I would like to think. King Charles is one of us , status is not important to make a difference. The butterfly is a nice touch makes me think of how fragile life is and not taken to be for granted.
It's awesome, the style.
I do like it, the fresh approach , it’s thought provoking. However it does seem to fight the background and the foreground, submersed in tomatoe soup?
I like it. The portrait is beautiful. I feel there is a lot of symbolism in this painting- beyond the King of England.
The view over the rooftops of the old fishing village of La Pigna in San Remo has layers of history, and a beautiful patina of colour and age, with hues of peach to terracotta . Similarly in this painting, capturing the monring light, I built the layers to capture this richness and the lovely colour contrasts of the pale blue sky, the Mediterranean, the roof tops, and the shadows cast across the buildings.
